Finding Topics

Not sure what to research? That’s totally normal! Choosing a topic is often the hardest part. Try the resources and strategies below to help you spark ideas and narrow your focus:

  • Browse your textbook – Look at chapter titles, section headings, or discussion questions to find possible topics.

  • Scan library databases – Use our databases to explore current journals, magazines, and newspapers. Browsing by subject or publication can help you spot trends and ideas. Need help? A librarian can show you how.

  • Explore encyclopedias – General reference sources like encyclopedias are great for background reading. They can help you understand the basics before diving deeper.

  • Talk it out – Discuss possible topics with your instructor, a classmate, or a librarian. Sometimes a short conversation can spark ideas!
