Get Started with Research

JSTOR

  • JSTOR is a digital library of academic journals, books, and primary sources.  Offers a high-quality, interdisciplinary archive to support scholarship and teaching. Includes archives of over 1,000 leading academic journals across    the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs   and other materials valuable for academic work.                                      

MyJSTOR

  1. Click on the MyJSTOR link on the top left of the screen beside the JSTOR search tools. 
  2. Any information you have saved in your account will appear in your account.  The menu on the left displays saved citations, alerts, articles, purchase history, and personal profile information.  Click on any listing to display the results.

  • Saved Citations:  Lists saved citations to export, share, track, and access the article.
  • Journal Alerts:  Receive notifications when favorite journals are available.
  • Shelf:  Add 3 articles for free on your shelf at a given time.
  • JPASS Downloads:  Personal access if your institution does not subscribe.
  • Purchase History:  Receipts for JPASS and individually purchased items.
  • My Profile:  Set up personal information and JSTOR updates. 

 

Basic Search

  1. Enter your search terms in the Find field on the Basic Search screen.
  2. Use the search tips above.
  3. Click the Search button.  The Result List displays.​

Advanced Search

  1. Click the Advanced Search link below the Find field.
  2. Enter your search terms in the first Find field on the Advanced Search screen.
  3. Choose the search field from the optional Select a Field drop-down list (full-text, title, author, abstract, or caption text).
  4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second set of Find fields.
  5. Select a Boolean operator (AND< OR< NOT) to combine the two Find field entries.
  6. You can enter another Boolean operator, keyword, and search field in the third set of fields.
  7. If you need additional rows, click the Add Field
  8. Select Narrow By options:
  • Item Type: Articles, Books, Pamphlets, Reviews, Miscellaneous
  • Date Range: YYYY, YYY/mm, YYYY/MM/DD
  • Language: All languages or select preference
  • Publication Title:  Name of resource
  • ISBN:  identification number of resource
  • Journal Filters: Select discipline and/or journal
  1.  Click the Search button.  The Result List displays.

Reading the Search Results

  1. Use the tabs at the top of the search results list to filter results to a specific type of content (journals, books, pamphlets).
  2. Use the sorting options to view search results by relevance, oldest items, or newest items.
  3. Use the “Display” option to view more results on a single page.
  4. By default, all search results are for content licensed or purchased by the host institution. Researchers may choose to see results for all content on JSTOR by changing the “Content I can access” option to “All Content.”

Record Display

  1. From the search results, click on Read Online or Download PDF to access the resource.
  2. To view details of the record, click on the title.  The title, author, and source information are provided
  3. The tools box on the right includes the option to Download PDF, Citation Tools, and view Journal Info.
  4. View the article, thumbnails, and references below the citation information.  Use the arrows on the side of the article to flip through the pages.
